The rest of our summer vacation together flew by. Each day we grew closer, and I felt more comfortable spending time with a girl, but each day we knew was one day closer to being pulled apart by the end of our vacation. We spent the remaining week doing plenty of fun lake activities together: swimming, sunbathing, sailing, kayaking, and rock jumping.

On our last night together before Charlotte had to leave for home we sat together in front of a campfire on the lakeshore just like we had the first night we met but tonight. We both knew we only had a short time together. We sat close to each other with the Milky Way shining above; a crescent-shaped moon beamed back at us.

“I don’t want you to leave,” I said.

“I don't want to go home either,” Charlotte said.

“Will you remember me when I’m gone?”

“Yes, of course, Luke.”

Suddenly a dazzlingly bright, fiery, yellow-gold ball of light darted across the black night sky, it broke apart into small pieces before it vanished completely, the trajectory arched somewhere over the horizon. The meteorite had vanished all within less than a second, burning up in the atmosphere. We were both surprised by its beauty and our luck at being able to witness such an amazing spectacle.

“Meteorite!” I exclaimed.

“I thought it was going to crash right on top of us,” Charlotte said. “I thought the same thing, but they look closer than they really are. It's kind of an illusion.”

“That was so spectacular,” remarked Charlotte.

“Yes. Did you know they've proven Einstein’s last unproven theory. Gravitational waves actually exist in space,” I said.

“No I didn't hear about that. That's cool.”

“Hey, we should make a wish! After all how lucky are we to see a meteorite so close.”

“Tell me what you wished for?” Charlotte asked.

“I don’t want to tell you, otherwise it won’t come true.”

The next day, I walked around to Charlotte’s friend’s place as they were getting ready to leave. I gave Charlotte a hug and I didn't want to let her go.

“Don’t forget our meteorite,” I said.

“How could I ever forget?” Charlotte said smiling.

“Me or the meteorite?” I asked.

“I won't forget either.”

“So I guess this is goodbye then. It’s a pity we live so far apart.”

“Yes, it's a shame, but maybe we can still talk sometimes on the phone?” She asked.

Charlotte was late and had to go, I watched as she climbed into her friend's car.

“Bye, Luke!” She called out.

“Goodbye, Charlotte!”

As the car began to pull away, she leaned out the window blew me a kiss and yelled, “I love you, Luke.”

My first summer romance ended as quickly as it had started. I watched the car drive away, and I realized we had forgotten to exchange numbers.

Falling in love for the first time was totally bittersweet!
